Every month KaePea sends her Patreon members image sheets of her art. So far each month I have put them in a folder for inspiration. But this week I decided that I was going to challenge myself and others to take those sheets and use them to kick start our inspiration.

So I found an empty journal and set about pulling all the sheets I had and downloading the ones I didn’t have hard copies of. I also pulled my ink-tense sticks , watercolor brushes and watercolor pallet. Began with cutting the sheet up to make new layouts.

Grungy Art Journal Page - Own Your Dreams

 

Hello, everyone!! I hope you all had a great holiday. Can you believe that the new year is just around the corner? I know after this crazy year, we are probably all very excited at the prospect of new beginnings, but also maybe wary at the same time. I hope that wherever you are, you're doing well, and feeling hopeful!

 

I will tell you, I had a really hard time with this project. I had no idea what to do. I finally landed on my default- a journal page. I used some of the collage papers I made in my last project, along with some rust dyed fabric and other bits I have hanging around. 

The first thing I did was stamp with some acrylic ink, then on top of that I glued down a layer of rust dyed fabric. I have been really loving the texture the fabric brings, and sometimes the rust really pops when you glue it down. 

I painted with some more acrylic ink and coffee, did some more paint stamping, and then started my collage. I knew I wanted to use the flying heart images, so I really built my collage focal point around that.

Halloween Book Made from One Sheet of Paper

                                          

Can you believe it's almost Halloween? In some ways this crazy year has gone so slow, but in others it's been so fast! Halloween always kicks off the holiday season for me. It's when we start really getting in to fall, fun decorations start going up, pumpkins start coming out, and we head into Thanksgiving and Christmas soon after. 

My project this month was dedicated to the spooky holiday thanks to the variety of stamps and foamies that are available through ArtFoamies, 100 Proof Press, and Rubbermoon stamps. 

  

I created this little booklet from one large sheet of watercolor paper, measuring 12 x 18 inches (I cut a giant 18 x 24 inch watercolor sheet in half). I covered it in gesso, then painted it with different hues of oranges and yellows. I did it in a fun, messy way, not caring what was where, since the ultimate goal was to fold it up into a book.

I then decorated each page with stamps, Tim Holtz Halloween Paper Dolls, and some vintage papers and goodies.

Vintage Photo Album

 

Hi everyone! 

It’s Emilie here. 

I’m showing you today how to make a simple "Vintage Photo Album". Making handmade books is one of my favorite things to do. This book is basic and can be used to store notes, birthdates, photos, quotes, etc…

I started to apply a coat of grey color acrylic paint on a 9x12 canvas sheet. I let it dry completely. This is going to be used as cover of the book.

Then I applied some off-white acrylic paint with a sponge through the “botanical backdrop” stencil designed by Kae Pea.

I added more texture by stamping first with some “Watering Can” (grey color) Archival Ink pad, staying in similar color tone, then with a bright green acrylic paint color. The stamps I used are “Handwritten Letter 1788”, “Twig Cross Section 1”, “Paris Cancellation”, “Simple Post Card” and “Spry Evergreen Branch” from 100 Proof Press. 

The next step was the preparation of my pages. I cut 3 sheets of cardstock (Beige color) in half to get 6 pieces of 8 ½ x 5 ½ inches. I scored each piece at 4 1/8, 4 ¼ and 4 3/8 inches. This is to give some flexibility to the pages. 

I embellished my pages by stamping “Dandelions” ArtFoamies stamps by Red Tin Roof with the white part of Moonlight Duo Ink pad first, then with “Watering Can” archival Ink. I just like the look of it.

I also stamped few pages with the 100 Proof Press stamps previously used and a new floral stamp called “Bouquet”.

For making the hinge of the book, I chose a “kraft” color cardstock. I cut my cardstock in half and stamped with two previous stamps from 100 Proof Press using again some archival ink. It gives a vintage look that I like. It is also a great way to make your own patterned paper. The reason why I cut my cardstock in half and used two different stamps is because I didn’t know which one I wanted to choose for my hinge at the beginning. Finally, I used the one with the floral pattern. I cut a piece of 2 x 5 1/2 inches and scored at 5/8 of a inch and 1 3/8 inches.

I cut 2 pieces of 4 1/8 x 5 ½ inches from my canvas sheet for the front and back cover. At that point I was not completely satisfied how the cover looked like so I added more stamping using again the “Dandelions” ArtFoamies stamps with a different green color.

The last part is the assembly of the book, see video below. 

Please be aware that my oral English is imperfect as it is not my birth language (I’m French). Nevertheless, the visual instructions are clear enough to follow along. 

Voila! 

The assembly instructions of the book I showed you today are really basic and simple. You can now let you imagination and creativity go to make your own. The possibilities are endless.

Go + See + Explore - Art Journal Spread

Hello, everyone! It's Laura, back on the blog today. I am sharing another art journal spread, but one with a little different feel this time. 

This project did not start as a journal spread. In fact, I had planned to only make an assortment of tags. But once I started going, this is the direction it led!

I really wanted to try stamping with ArtFoamies and acrylic paint into the gloss sprays. I thought it might make a cool, grungy effect, and I think I was right! I really loved how it turned out! Incidentally, I had some extra spray/paint on one of the foamies, and ended up stamping it on a tag, since it was the closest thing. When I sprayed that tag, the paint and spray I had stamped acted as a resist, and I think it made the result even cooler! 

Going back to the tags, I love the way the white ink from the Moonlight Duos pops on the dark background. I've tried a number of white inks, and this is the only one I have ever been happy with.

With the holidays fast approaching, I wanted to explore some handmade gifts ideas using my absolutely fabulous stash of RubberMoon stamps.  I decided to create a small art journal using kp5009 New Moon, kp5021 Make Art, kp5000 Cheering Section, kp5004 Airlyte, kp5003 Banner and Beret, kp5006 Shasta, kp5005 Teardrop, and kp5002 Heart Full among many of the other RM stamps in my collection.

Pre-assembled art journals leave little to the imagination.  I wanted something more personal.  Using a sheet of cold-pressed, 140 pound watercolor paper as the background, I took my stamps and created an interesting pattern.  My final design include 3 rows of 5 images. 

I then took my watercolor paints out and added color around each stamped image.  I used the brighter colors in my palette.  I tend to prefer pinks, purples, blues, greens, and oranges best.  You can use your own favorite colors.  After all, it's your unique creation!

Once the paint had dried, I flipped the paper over and glued a sheet of scrapbook paper to what would be the inside cover of the journal.  Using a pair of scissors, I cut the paper in half and used my laminating machine to create a glossy, permanent front and back cover.  (Make sure to cut off all the excess lamination from the top, bottom, and sides of the cover.)

I then cut 10 sheets of watercolor paper in half for the inside of the journal and hole punched everything.  After I was done doing that, I assembled the book by opening the album rings and slipping the covers and sheets of paper onto them.  Once everything was lined up properly, I closed the rings.

Here's what the back of the finished journal looks like:

I added some yarn to the album rings for some flare.  You can also use ribbon, beads, and charms to make it your own.  I thought of a million additional ideas for embellishing the art journal once I was done making it.

That's it!  Other than an hour of your time, this little gem costs nothing to create.  Think about all the people you can cross off your gift list this Christmas by making a few handmade art journals.
