Set of whimsical Bookmarks

Hi everyone!

It’s Emilie with you today.

I’m happy to share a "Set of Bookmarks" that I have created playing with a mix of stamps from Rubbermoon, 100 Proof Press and ArtFoamies.

Bookmarks are a little piece of art that can be useful for a lot of things like books, planners, bullet journals, etc...

I’m going to show you few classic and simple techniques that I often use and be also useful for making cards and art journal pages…

Set of bookmarks Emilie Murphy

All my bookmarks measure 7x2 ½ inches.

I used some 140lb/300g watercolor paper and rounded the corners.

I started my first bookmark by putting down some washi tape strips. Then I applied watercolor on my entire surface. First, I added some texture by stamping with some “Solar Flare Orange” Moonlight Duo Ink pad, similar tone than the watercolor I used.

The stamp I used is called “Imperfect Wheels” from Rubbermoon

I removed the washi tape strips and added more texture with the “Number Column” stamp from 100 proof Press and some “Nebula Rust” Moonlight Duo Ink pad.

Next, I used my stamping platform to be able to position my “Ladybug” stamp from 100 Proof Press where I wanted. I used the color and white parts of the “” Moonlight Duo Ink pad to be able to see slightly my image and color it with watercolor. Then I stamped again my image darker but not completely black because I didn’t want my image to be too crisp, just a matter of preference. Moonlight Duo ink pads are great for doing that as the white part of the pad allows you to play on the tint and hue of the color.

Then I use a black pen to draw a border all around the edge of the bookmark.

I could have stopped here but I usually like adding a quote or a sentiment to my bookmarks. For this one I used the “Happy Thoughts Text” stamp from Rubbermoon. I just cut out the words I wanted. This stamp is such a versatile stamp. I use it almost for all my projects (lol!). At the end, I also decided to use a last stamp called “Loops with text” from 100 Proof Press that was perfect as an add-on to my border. Finally I put an eyelet on the top of my bookmark and added a piece of ribbon.

My second bookmark is quite simple. I started by embossing ArtFoamies foam stamps “Microcosms” with white embossing powder on my entire surface. I also embossed my sentiment “Be happy” from Rubbermoon on black cardstock and the two other stamps from Rubbermoon called “Imperfect Wings Petals” that look like wings on vellum paper.

EMJUL20_img06

Then I colored my bookmark with watercolor paint. I let it dry and added some black splatters with a black water soluble crayon.

EMJUL20_img07

Then I used the stamp “Bunny misfit too” from Rubbermoon as my focal image that I colored also with some watercolors. Later, I glued down the embossed vellum wings on the back of my bunny.

Finally I glued down the cute bunny with wings over some black thread and the sentiment “Be happy”. This time I finished up my bookmark by stapling a piece ribbon at the top.

For my third bookmark, I applied some “Unbleached Titanium” (off-white) paint with a sponge over Kae Pea’s stencil called “Botanical Backdrop”. I purposely didn’t cover up all my surface.

After my paint was completely dried, I applied both some watercolor and some “Milky Way Magenta” Moonlight duo ink to make the color brighter at different places. I rubbed the pad directly on the paper.

EMJUL20_img11

I let it dry and rubber a rag to remove some ink over the paint. This technique allows you to make the stencil pattern better visible. The reason I used some off-white paint instead of Gesso or white paint is because I wanted the stencil pattern to be subtle and not too bright compared to the pink color.

Next, I added some texture stamping with one of my favorite stamp “Happy thoughts text” from Rubbermoon and “Milky Way Magenta” Moonlight Duo Ink pad.

EMJUL20_img13

I highlighted the stencil pattern on my background with a white pen. I stamped my image “Angela” from Rubbermoon and colored it with watercolor. If you wonder why I use watercolor is because it is an easy and quick way to color an image (at least for me) and also because I like the imperfect and washy look that watercolors bring.

Tip: Here I stamped my image using a stamping platform to be sure to get a crisp image as I stamped on 140lb watercolor paper and the stamp has bold lines.

Once again, I used my stamping platform to stamp my sentiment “Dream big” from “Inspirational words” stamps set by Cherry Pie (same owner than 100 Proof Press). As I wanted my sentiment to overlap my background and my image, the stamping platform came handy for that. I positioned my image where I wanted it to be on my background. I stamped with VersaMark ink first on the image. Then I removed the image and stamped it again on the background at the same position. Then I embossed it with white embossing powder.

To add more texture to my background, I stamped again the “Happy Thoughts text” stamp from Rubbermoon at several places and embossed it with white embossing powder.

EMJUL20_img16

I also stamped with some black ink the “Simple stars” stamp from Rubbermoon and the “Plant Cross Section 5” stamp from 100 Proof Press contrasting with the white embossing.

Finally I glued down my girl image, put an eyelet and added a piece of ribbon.

As we are at the beginning of July, I’m thinking about vacation. For me, summer vacation is a synonym for beach, certainly because I spent all my summers along the beach during my childhood. Therefore I chose the sea theme for my fourth and last bookmark.

I started by scoring my piece of watercolor paper every 5/8 inch and rubbed my “Aurora Teal” Moonlight duo ink pad on it. I rubbed simultaneously the color and the white part until I was satisfied and covered the entire surface. I let it dry completely.

EMJUL20_img19

Then I applied some VersaMark ink with my pad on some corners and stamped the “Twig Cross Section 2” and “Twig Cross Section 4” stamps from 100 Proof Press that I embossed with white embossing powder.

EMJUL20_img20

I again used the embossing technique with the following stamps from 100 Proof Press, “Seahorse”, “Taxus Branch” and “Twig Cross Section 2” that I stamped respectively with Smokey Gray, Habanero and Majestic blue VersaFine inks and embossed with clear embossing powder. I did the same for the sentiment ‘’Start a new chapter” from Rubbermoon. I cut out the different images and glued them down on my bookmark.

EMJUL20_img21

I also added a piece of white mesh (tulle), some thread and a piece of canvas cloth where I have stamped on it the “Happy Thoughts text” stamp from Rubbermoon. And again, I finished up my bookmark with an eyelet and piece of ribbon on the top.
